Indian passports for newborns are issued after successful registration of birth at the Indian Embassy or Consulate. Since a child is being issued a passport for the first time, it is treated as a fresh application, not a re-issue.
Passports for children under the age of 15 years are issued with a validity of 5 years. For newborns, the process includes submitting proof of birth, parent’s passport details, and a completed birth registration form. Once the birth is registered and a Birth Certificate is issued by the Embassy, parents can apply for the child’s passport.
As per current rules, handwritten endorsements are not allowed, so all details must be correctly entered at the time of application. The child must be registered as an Indian citizen before a passport can be issued.
This process ensures that the child receives a valid Indian passport reflecting all correct personal details from the beginning.

1. Can I apply for a passport for my newborn immediately after birth?
Yes. You can apply for a fresh passport for your newborn child right after birth. Birth must first be registered at Du Digital ICAC (as per jurisdiction), and both parents must be present in person with a prior appointment.
2. Can I register the birth and apply for the passport at the same time?
Yes. It is strongly recommended to apply for both services—birth registration and passport issuance—together. The Embassy/Consulate will issue both documents simultaneously.
3. What documents are required for a newborn’s passport?
You will need:
- Birth registration form
- Child’s birth certificate (to be issued by the Embassy/Consulate)
- Passports and valid visas/residence permits of both parents

6. Can I submit my newborn’s application by post?
No. For fresh passport issuance for a newborn, both parents are required to be present in person for document submission and verification at Du Digital ICAC.
7. How long does it take to receive a fresh passport for a newborn?
The processing time may take up to seven weeks. Applicants will receive SMS updates, and status can be tracked online via the “Track Application” section.
8. What is the validity of a newborn’s passport?
Passports issued to newborns are typically valid for 5 years or until the child reaches 18 years of age, whichever is earlier.
9. What if my child is considered a citizen of South Korea by local authorities?
As per Indian law, a child born abroad to Indian parents is eligible for Indian citizenship by descent. However, India does not allow dual citizenship. At the time of registration, parents must declare that the child does not hold any foreign passport.
10. Is thumb impression or signature needed for newborn’s passport application?
Yes. Since the child cannot sign, a left thumb impression of the child must be provided in the designated box. A parent should sign the declaration, but not in the box reserved for the applicant’s signature.
